Special Memoriam

Since the 2018 Induction Banquet last April, our Robert “Tick” Cloherty – Western Chapter has suffered the loss of two long-time Executive Board Vice Presidents, as well as two cherished friends who were valuable contributors to our chapter:

Jim was a long time scholastic and intercollegiate football official and scholastic basketball official who worked 235+ college and 200 high school football games and 500+ high school basketball games. He officiated NCAA II & III championship playoff games in 1978, ’79, ’81, ’83; and several Division I Army-Navy games. In 1985 Jim refereed the legendary Boston College regular season Division I game on November 23rd, 1984 against the 12th ranked defending national champion Miami Hurricanes. That game ended with the celebrated Hail Mary touchdown pass from B. C. QB Doug Flutie to WR Gerard Phalen with no time remaining on the clock.

Jim was a valued member of the Executive Board of the Western Chapter (now Robert “Tick” Cloherty – Western Chapter) of the PA Sports Hall of Fame for 40+ years, the last 21 of which he served as one of our Executive Vice Presidents. Jim Owens passed away on January 22nd, 2019.

Washington who played college football at the University of Dayton before transferring to Pitt , where he played in the 1955 Sugar Bowl and the 1956 Gator Bowl. He was a tenth round draftee of the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1957. He coached football at Lehigh University where his team won the Lambert Trophy (Division II National Championship) in 1961. He served as defensive coordinator at Boston University (1964-67), at Harvard (1968-70 – his 1968 team was undefeated)) and at Pitt (1971-72). He also worked as an NFL Eastern area player talent scout (1973-78)

Pat was the wife of long time Robert “Tick” Cloherty – Western Chapter Executive Vice President (now Chapter Advisory Board member) Ray Bergman. For many years Pat served as one of our Chapter

(Board of Governors) delegates at many PA Sports HOF Fall and Spring meetings and was also the unofficial “hostess” for all “Tick-Western” hospitality rooms at our annual Chapter Induction Banquets as well as for those occasions when our chapter would host the State Induction Banquets in Pittsburgh. Pat Bergman passed away on December 7th, 2018

We also mourn the loss of Jim Gillooly, who, with his son Conner, performed the National Anthem at our annual Induction Banquets for many years, His beautiful tenor voice will be missed by all. Jim Gillooly passed away on January 19th, 2019
