
- A graduate of Montour High School and Penn State University
- Eight-time letterman at Montour in football, basketball and golf
- Played on three Class A undefeated football teams, winning the WPIAL Class A Championship in 1963 and 1964
- Winner of the 1965 Pittsburgh Curbstone Coaches Scholar Athlete Award and was Pennsylvania team co-captain in the 1966 Big 33 Game vs. Texas, completing 18 of 36 passes
- High school All-Conference, All-WPIAL, All-State and Scholastic Magazine All- American in 1965
- Quarterbacked Penn State to their only back-to-back undefeated seasons in 1969 and 1970
- Penn State was ranked #2 in both 1969 and 1970 and appeared in the Orange Bowl both seasons
- Was named the Most Valuable Back in the 1970 Orange Bowl Game
- At Penn State, he was AP All–State in 1968 and 1969, All–East in 1969 and AP Honorable Mention All– American in 1969
- He played in the Senior Bowl in 1970 and was a Dapper Dan National Award winner in 1969 and 1970
